How to Clean up A Blood Spill
This video by MERI shows how to use its biohazard mailback kit to clean up and dispose of blood-soaked items.
Follow these steps when cleaning up a blood spill:
- To begin, secure the area by closing off an area.
- Open MERI’s Blood Spill Clean and Up and Disposal Kit and remove the biohazard container and PPE. Keep the pre-paid shipping box and packing materials in a safe place as you’ll need them later.
- Put on protective equipment, including the visor, gloves, and a mask, before beginning the clean-up process. This can help avoid exposure to a bloodborne pathogen, such as HIV or Hepatitis B.
- Use tongs to pick up broken glass or bloody tissue.
- Sprinkle the Absorbent Granules evenly over the Blood or Infectious Waste Spill. Wait a few minutes for it to congeal.
- Bend and tear the bottom scraper off of the enclosed scoop. Use it to sweep up the congealed material into the enclosed red biohazard bag.
- Mix up a solution that is 10% bleach to 90% water. Spray this over the area. Let it sit for 10 minutes or more.
- Lay the absorbent pad over the area. Let it absorb the liquid.
- Place the absorbent pad in the bag or plastic container.
- Place PPE in the Plastic container.
- Wipe your hands with the antiseptic wipes and discard them afterward in the container. Follow up by washing your hands with soap and water for at least 30 seconds.
- Place the lid on the biohazard container. Follow the enclosed packaging instructions for placing the biohazard container in the pre-paid shipping box.
- Be sure to sign the manifest on the side of the shipping box and place one copy in the plastic sleeve on the outside of the box. Drop it off at any USPS post office or give it to your US Postal Carrier.
- Complete the enclosed exposure incident form and process it per your local state regulations or company protocol. Keep a copy of it file with your safety and human resource officer, along with a copy of the signed manifest from the biohazard blood spill kit.
